Composting Toilets: A Solution To Sanitation

They're the most luxurious toilets you'll find at a festival and a far cry from the disturbing toilet experience common at big events. Free of odour, clean and easy to use – Boom collaborators introduce a solution to sanitation?

What happens to the shit you flush down the toilet? It gets moved around in a sewage system, using up a third of the Sacred Earth's water supply, draining out into rivers and seas and pumped for miles where it can't be seperated again…

1.2 litres of body waste is mixed per 100 litres of pure drinking water. With 6.5 million people, each excreting 300 grams of shit - there's a lot of shit to shovel around. There are 450 cubic km of waste water carried into coastal areas by rivers and streams. This amount of polluted water requires 6000 cubic km of freshwater to dillute the problem. Over 70,000 different water contaminants have been identified because of this and other pollutants such as factory farming methods - causing diseases and atrocious sanitation problems.

Byggakuten Norden is the team responsible for fitting 160 composting toilets across the Boom site. The new toilets are a revelation for a festival of this scale – creating a toilet-friendly experience for Boomers and Boom staff alike.

"The toilets we are fitting are very basic for our standard," says Imad of Byggakuten Norden, "however, people seem to be very impressed with the quality so far. As a result, we too, are very happy to be a part of this project."

Water is our most basic human right. Yet there are 2.6 billion people in the world living with severe shortages.

Solution-based ideas as offered by Imad's team are finding their way to places such as Cameroon, where a newly approved project of long-term composting toilet technology has been approved for some 5000 homes. The Cameroon government also say they will eventually need sanitation solutions for a further 400,000 homes.

The bacteria free, enclosed, long-term composting system implemented at Boom means:

- No odour: Faeces are isolated with their pathogens over 30 years – never entering the environment therefore preventing pollution

- Yielding the brunt of plant nutrients in our excrement as a clean, safe-to-use fertilizer for agriculture

- Cutting up to 90 percent of the cost of waste handling, usually accumulated by transportation, meaning NO SEWAGE

- Saving the water used for flushing toilets

An excellent solution for Boomers and a revolutionary technology that is being slowly but surely adapted across the world – the sanitation system during this edition of Boom is a positive development as we continue to reduce our impact on the earth.
