Attentive to both new trends in electronica and the paradigm shifts in the international scene, Sónar 2014's line-up includes a selection of game changing producers and artists who are reshaping genres across the globe. It is a small but important revolution concerning the progression of sound and genre style (trap, grime, hip-hop, r&b, juke) and a new working methodology, no longer restricted to local regions, where the internet now takes centre stage.

One of the most significant consequences of this trend is the close proximity of two normally opposing worlds: the underground and the mainstream. With only a couple of EPs released on prestigious label Tri Angle, the youthful producer Evian Christ was called by Kayne West, and his beats can be heard on several tracks from West's latest album "Yeezus". Frenchman Dj Snake produced three tracks on Lady Gaga's recent album ("Artpop"), has remixed Major Lazer and AlunaGeorge and he is currently achieving worldwide success with "Turn Down For What". Spanish artist Alizzz has experienced a meteoric rise in popularity after releasing his latest material on Diplo's Mad Decent sub-label Jeffree's. These are just three examples of how today's young producers can quickly access the big leagues from their bedroom studios, thanks to their talent and the exponential power of the internet.

Two other artists on the verge of international stardom are Kaytranada and Ryan Hemsworth. Both amazingly talented beatmakers share a predisposition to remixing "unofficially" (for the most part) popular chart topping hip-hop and r&b hits (Frank Ocean, Janet Jackson, Outkast), with the objective of significantly improving the original. Meanwhile, Visionist and Machinedrum have already built a strong reputation and fan base with their risky electronica and easily recognizable individual sounds: the first (Englishman triumphs in the U.S.) revitalising grime with his minimalist and futuristic sound; the second (American triumphs in the UK), mixing post-dubstep, juke and drum'n'bass.

Trap, southern hip-hop mutation based on synthetic sounds and dubstep bass drops, is the hunting ground for two of the most promising young names at Sónar 2014, UZ and Hucci. Both share skills of the highest order in production and powerful beatmaking, each with their own distinctive style. Meanwhile duo BSN Posse firmly cement themselves as an integral name on the Spanish scene, with their recent EP on Basque label Sweat Taste. Meanwhile, DJ Nigga Fox goes beyond Portuguese borders with his ghetto music mixes, and Stwo has mesmerised audiences with his beats and edits of Drake & The Weeknd.
