It was a completion of their first cycle, a coming back home kind of step in their journey and also a mature coming of age, at the same time. Founded initially by Oeds Beydals (The Devil's Blood, Molassess, Death Alley) and Wout Kemkens (Shaking Godspeed) for a Roadburn collaboration back in 2018, Iron Jinn inevitably grew over time into a proper four-piece with the addition of Bob Holgenelst (Birth of Joy/Molassess) and Gerben Bielderman (Pauw) and put together a fantastically elusive, mysterious self-titled debut album whose premiere couldn't really have taken place anywhere else.

While fitting vaguely into the catch-all "rock" category, you might think music this sinister, this layered and this subtly, almost esoterically atmospheric could be difficult to retain all its power in a live setting. Well, Iron Jinn, enriched by keyboardist Jarno van Es, sure laid all those doubts to rest with a staggering full-album performance that turned out to be one of the major highlights of Roadburn 2023. Now, they are releasing that memorable, mind-bendingly psychedelic show as both a double album and a concert film, and the good news is that you can watch the latter while you wait for the former to arrive, right now. It's not quite the same as having been there, but the vibe we felt is so well captured that it's close to a time machine as we can get.

Oeds Beydals told us that "the Iron Jinn 2023 Roadburn performance was the perfect opportunity for us to present our debut album in the flesh. Roadburn's Walter Hoeijmakers made it possible for us to expand the band's line-up for this release show so we could recreate the layered density the album has to offer. We were playing to an energetic and receptive audience at 013's Next Stage around midnight. To most of the people present, it was probably the first introduction to the material and the group and still the band and the crowd moved as a unit. Jarno Van Es joined us on keys for what was to become the 5th live appearance of the band as a whole and the first with him added. We didn't shy away from a new creative process to make the songs come out as vibrant as possible. Creating fresh counterparts to the more produced studio versions by adding spontaneous improvisation and new fire to the music. Although we hope to keep evolving, this show is a moment in time that we are thankful to have captured: a band getting into its own at a very early stage."

On Friday 5 april,  Iron Jinn is coming to EKKO to present a new live album recorded during Roadburn 2023. More info here
