Words by Róisín Warner

Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances Deep Sea Arcade were forced to cancel their show at Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen last Saturday 17th August. We did, however, manage to get an interview with bassist Nick Weaver before they left the country for their hometown of Sydney...

So this year you came down to Brighton and played for us at The Great Escape 2013, how would you summarise your experience of the festival in one word?
Explosive.

How does playing shows in the UK compare with those in Australia?
It's nice to play to more people who have no idea who we are, and concentrate on winning new people over. That's the major difference we faced coming over off the back of a couple of big tours in Australia, is having to build something up again in a place that was still fairly new to us, and it's been really rewarding. The venues here are awesome and people are really enthusiastic about music. In fact on a side note, people in Australia so often seem to be either passionate about music or sport, rarely both. Here hooligans and music lovers seem to be the same adorable creature.

Do you have a particular highlight or memory from TGE13?
We had a great afternoon sitting on the beach having a drink with Charlie Boyer And The Voyeurs and some other bands as the sun went down. It was magical.

Did you manage to catch any other bands while in Brighton? Who were your favourites?
I saw Temples for the first time at TGE. They sounded amazing. Also Melody's Echo Chamber of course and New Zealand band Popstrangers.

Where was the best place you visited in Brighton?
Coalition, where we played was a great venue. And there's also that massive creepy vintage store somewhere. We must've spent hours in there trying on wigs and playing battery powered keyboards.

Have you played in the city before The Great Escape?
We actually played TGE a couple of years back but we were still in a our nappies back then. We played Digital and also watched a great gig inside a laundry.

What can we expect from your set at Hoxton Bar & Kitchen, 17th August?
More pyrotechnics than usual and a teary farewell until next time.

We are always on the lookout for cracking new bands, do you have any recommendations for us?
I think maybe everyone knows about them by now, but Telegram are some London friends of ours and they're bloody great. We watched their first ever gig in a dress shop in Shoreditch and they were already ruling then.

What's the one song you wish you had written?
Jingle Bells

What's the first album you bought?
Fine Young Cannibals! I was 5.

What's next for Deep Sea Arcade?
We're heading back to Australia in September to do a tour there and finish making another album. Looking forward to coming back to the UK very soon though.

Unfortunately we never did get to say a teary farewell, but we're excited for when they next return to the shores of Blighty, bigger and better with more pyrotechnics and psychedelia than before.

In the meantime, enjoy some "Granite City' -
