With the digital age steadily evolving around us, like some sort of unstoppable machine, vinyls, tapes and compact disks have all fallen, hidden in the massive shadow of today's digital era. Although it has never been easier to track down your favourite music or listen to your songs on the move, it's undeniable that the coming of the digital era has also had a negative impact on certain aspects of the music industry.

Last Shop Standing is a powerful documentary released this September that charts the rise, fall and rebirth of the independent record shop. With appearances from Johnny Marr, Billy Bragg and Paul Weller amongst other musicians and industry insiders, the film celebrates the spirit and camaraderie that surrounds record shops, how they are more than just outlets to buy music but a place to meet people, hang out and find all manners of hidden gems they never knew existed.

In the 80's, there were over 2200 UK independent record stores, by 2009 there were only 269 shops left, this harrowing stat puts into perspective the destructive influence of the digital age on record stores.

But what makes this documentary so poignant is the way in which it reveals the passion and community behind independent record stores, the owner's stories emotional and hard-hitting. Not only does Last Shop Standing educate, it also grips you by the heart and celebrates the world of the independent record store.

It is being screened in a variety of locations across the UK in the coming weeks; visit the Last Shop Standing website to find the location closest to you.
