Patrick Durham (france)

  • What is your name?
    Patrick Durham
  • Which country are you from?
Originally lived in Hungary (but half-English), now live in Lyon, France.
  • What do you do in your daily life?
I work as a consultant in a large IT company, making me spend my life behind a computer screen. In my free time I like switching the computer screen to a camera screen and stare at that instead.
  • When did you visit PP Europe for the first time?
Started in 2010, but had been thinking about it for a few years before that.
  • What was the main reason to visit PP Europe for the first time?
The sheer number of great bands in one place. Lyon isn't the best place for seeing prog bands performing, and traveling to Paris or Switzerland would have pushed the price of a show up quite high. My mother was also working in Brussels at the time, so I was able to combine a visit to her with PPE. I had spoken to a few people on the UltimateMetal PPE forum before arriving, but barely knew anyone.
  • How many times have you visited PP Europe so far?
    Three times so far: 2010, 2011, 2012.

  • What was your first impression of PP Europe at your first visit?
"Why the hell did I not choose to stay with all these lovely people at the castle!" As my first multi-day metal festival I wasn't really sure what staying in one place with hundreds of metal-heads would be, so had elected to sleep at my mother's place back in Brussels. I did not make the same mistake in the next two years, apart from the annoying drives to and fro I had missed out on a lot of great times.
  • What is your overall impression of PP Europe?
Very well organized by a small, dedicated team, who have found a perfect balance between well-known and relatively unknown bands and melded it all together into a coherent whole, all in a small town, whose inhabitants don't actually seem to mind being invaded by a few hundred people dressed in black for a weekend each year.
  • Why should people visit PP Europe?
It is unique, and not easy to put into words if you haven't experienced it, but I'll try. PPE isn't just about the music, it's about the people who have come together through the music, and who despite only meeting in one weekend of each year have formed lasting friendships.
  • Tell us in 1 sentence what PP Europe means to you?
The best weekend in the year.
  • The last words are yours....
When the feeling you get upon saying your last goodbyes after the festival ends is that the wait until the next edition of the festival comes around the next October is going to be way too long, you know that you have found something very special...
