Why Angel Haze Is My Heroine

"OK I'M RAMBO" are the first words of the song "Werkin" Girls". This is the song that made me stronger and never fails to put me in the "I don't give a fuck about you superficial little stupid ass bitches"-mood. (Just like "hate on me" by Jill Scott. Check it out below. Fucking amazing song.)

Anyway, when I heard "Werkin" Girls" for the first time, I was dealing with some relationship bullshit, and I felt like "I really don't need this crap anymore, I'm a grown ass woman and I will put all my sadness into aggressive energy" (and jump around my ex's flat shouting "I'M RAMBO" !) I thought to myself that the energy that this woman is giving me is incredible. She seems so strong.
Of course I had to go and google her.

And then I found "Cleaning out my Closet". If you haven't heard it until now, click here and listen to it. I'm dead serious. In those 20 years of my life in which I have listened to thousands of gospels, soul & hiphop tracks, I have never, ever heard lyrics as touching, as deep, as honest as Angel's voice is giving us in this song. How can one single woman be so brave to share her story this way? To me, this means she is a Phoenix. She has risen from ashes to become something incredibly amazing. As she says in her Rolling Stones interview about her album "Dirty Gold": "Gold comes from the dirt. It's underground and you mine it and make it better. That's how I view people. You go through your dirt and your tough stuff and you deal and you get better. Once you come out of it, you're fucking worth something" and even though she said this in the context of her work on her album, I think this explanation fits her perfectly.

It was July 2014 when I first went to Openair Frauenfeld after crying for years that I couldn't go because I either didn't have any money or because I was simply too young. When I saw that Angel Haze, my heroine of 2013/2014, was going to come to the festival I simply knew "fuck it, I'm going, no matter what" and this was one of the greatest decisions ever. When I stood infront of the stage, listening to Angel rap all those songs that I listened to at home when I felt like helpless, I was simply overwhelmed. She then came down the stairs to walk through the crowd while rapping and then all of a sudden she stood next to me, putting her arm around me and rapping for half a minute. I was blown away, her energy was so impressively massive that I still think about it today. It wasn't about her rapping even though it was flawless, it was something about her aura that was captivating.

Since that day, I love this woman even more, and I simply can not stop to hope to finally really meet her one day and tell her how thankful I am for her music. Go check out all of her stuff. If you love rap, you will not regret it. But don't forget one thing. LISTEN to the words.
Much love,
Helen
