Osunlade

Following his stellar performances at SuncéBeat 2, Gavin Kendrick wrote this about the DJ who describes this event as the best festival he's ever been to.

"Each day at SuncéBeat was filled with musical gems, forgotten, remembered and completely unknown, but there was one track that stood above all others in a "what on earth is this?' moment. I'd missed Osunlade's terrace set, and everybody I spoke to assured me it was a highlight of the week. Disappointed, I knew I couldn't miss his session in Barbarella's - and it was every bit as good as I'd hoped. It was the third time he'd played it at that week, and - on that blistering Barbarella's system - Roni Size's "Watching Windows' sounded magnificent."

The musical riches of 2013 began with a brand new LP from Osunlade: "A Man With No Past Originating The Future". Following excursions on Soul Jazz Records, BBE Music and Strictly Rhythm, Osunlade returned to his own Yoruba Records imprint for his seventh full length project.

One of Osunlade's most poignent, although lesser known tracks is "Mr President", released in 2004 on his The Year Of The Monkey 12". The biting political critique that made this track so gripping returns here in the lyrics of newcomer Supreme on the track "Sour The Plan', documenting the seemingly inevitable social and industrial collapse on our collective horizon. But far from wallowing in despair, this prophetic misery is quickly engulfed by the fire of hope in "Luna Moth', a brief, rousing and percussive groove that wakes the spirit and clears the way for the sparse yet euphoric tracks "Camera Shy' and "Satellite Beneath The Stars'.

Just as his studio work explores a wider range of sounds than might be expected from a selector known primarily for his work in the deep house scene, his increasingly rare DJ sets follow this same far-reaching embrace.
