Last weekend (15 and 16 February), 6,400 people enjoyed the 49 performances in the line-up of Sónar Reykjavik, the festival's inaugural event in Iceland's capital, featuring performances as outstanding as those by Diamond Version (recently added to Sónar Barcelona's line-up), Modeselektor, Squarepusher, John Talabot, James Blake, Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto, Sísý Ey, Ólafur Arnalds and GusGus, among others.


The richness of the Icelandic scene


As well as big international names, Sónar Reykjavik presented over 30 artists from the dynamic Icelandic scene, including some of the most important in the country such as Valgeir Sigurdsson (boss of the label Bedroom Community, with a delicate show combining the classical and the synthetic), Sísý Ey (deep house with three live singers on stage, one of the night's surprises) and Mugison (one of the most popular artists on the island right now). Other highlights were the three projects that can also be enjoyed at Sónar Barcelona on 13, 14 and 15 June: the young composer and performer Ólafur Arnalds, halfway between a neoclassical approach and new electronics, who will be presenting his new songs with a trio format; the electronic and cinematic pop group Samaris, recent winners of Iceland's album of the year; and the duo of djs Gluteus Maximus, consisting of two well-known and highly respected mixers on the Icelandic scene, one of whom is a member of GusGus.

The festival took place on four stages at Harpa, the city's magnificent auditorium next to the sea, which has recently been nominated for the prestigious Mies Van Der Rohe architecture award. Sónar Reykjavík was covered by more than 80 accredited journalists, practically half of whom came from other European countries.
