Lebogang Masemola

02. Juli 2011, Bühne Fredenbaumpark

Lebogang Masemola, better known as Lebo was born the youngest of five children. She says: "My family describes me to have been too serious for a child and quiet responsible for a last born. Growing up, my first steps were in a country in a state of emergency pillard in a christian and politically active family. A family and a people that seemed to sing at any provocation.

Nearly every evening the family set together to thank God with beautiful Hymns for another day survived. When morning came, we put on an amour of song, guerilla chants and protest songs.(Song became the organizer, educator and comforter.) Sunday was special and was reserved for praising and celebrating. While my sister and brothers cassette players were oozing with the voices of The Commodores , Roberta Fleck, Sade, Lion  Richie, Luther Vandross, my parents listened to Township jazz and American jazz with the likes of Mariam Makeba , Mahotella Queens, Dark city sisters, Nina simone ,Sarah Vaughn and Billie holiday. With my childish command of the English language I gave new meaning to Whitneys lyrics and danced to Brenda fassie. So I grew with song belonging to life.
In fact it was so much part of life that I didn't give it any thought at all. It took a very long time before It even occurred to me that i could be an artist.

After my matriculation I went ahead and applied to be a chiropractor (medical student). it didn't take long until  my inner compass called and I followed. i left South Africa for a second time.
Outside of my country I got to know a South African Mbaqanga band. It was with them in Hamburg Germany that I got the chance to understand and appreciate my traditional music. Prior to which I had had only been taught (in a class room that is) Vivaldi , Bach and Andrew lloyd webber les miserables.

With all this musical and cultural input, I had the desire to find my own voice and style. i needed to explore my own thoughts and perspectives  and find a way to share and express them.
So I began to write my first lines, verses and eventually a song. Soon after which i started working with my own band.

Word and Music is my vehicle to reach out, to expand my mind and hopefully the minds and hearts of others beyond circumstance.
A charming companion through it all!"
