In the build-up to The Great Escape's 10th festival next year, we're taking the opportunity to look back year-by-year at the crème de la crème of our phenomenal alumni. Here are just a few of the best artists to grace our stages in 2008:

Vampire Weekend (USA)

Played @ Concorde 2
Named the "Best Act in the World Today' at the Q awards in 2013, New York indie rockers Vampire Weekend have only built on the hype that's surrounded them since their devastatingly catchy self titled 2008 debut album. Their electric TGE headline set was described as "the hot event of the night' by NME, attracting the likes of Zane Lowe, along with a vast horde of fans. Since then the band have gone on to headline Latitude and Bénecassim in 2010, as well as playing Glastonbury's Pyramid Stage. Their most recent offering, "Modern Vampires of the City", won the Grammy for Best Alternative Album, and has been followed by a massive world tour ending with numerous festival appearances this summer.

Example (UK)

Played @ The Pressure Point
From playing at The Pressure Point in 2008, to a set at Concorde 2 in 2011, and culminating in a Brighton Dome headline show last year, Example's TGE trajectory has seen him rocket to the top over the last six years. His dynamic dance music has made him a favourite with audiences over the years, presenting a high-energy, exciting show. Sophomore album "Won't Go Quietly" (2010) entered the UK charts at Number 4, quickly followed by the release of 2011's "Playing in the Shadows" featuring number one singles "Changed the Way You Kiss Me" and "Stay Awake". Example is currently touring the UK until November off the back of his fifth album, which was released over the summer. Be sure to catch him for a hit-packed night that will have you on your feet.

Crystal Castles (Canada)

Played @ Digital/Barfly
Electro-rock innovators Crystal Castles have built a reputation for their fantastically wild live show over the years. Their 2009 TGE performance, headlining the Brighton Barfly was one to remember, with lead singer Alice Glass spending the majority of the performance in the crowd of dedicated fans. The band's experimental approach earned their second album its place at No. 39 of NME's Top 100 Albums of the Decade list, as well as attracting Robert Smith of The Cure as a collaborator on single "Not in Love". Scoring headline tours for NME, as well as playing huge festival slots at Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds, and Coachella, Crystal Castles have established themselves as one of the most exciting live acts of the past decade. Although Glass announced her departure from the band earlier this month, we look forward to Glass's solo projects and whatever becomes of Crystal Castles and remaining member Ethan Kath.

Mumford & Sons (UK)
MUMFORD & SONS
Played @ Sallis Benney Theatre
It's safe to say that Mumford & Sons are amongst the greatest folk based artists to come out of the UK to date, with an Album of the Year Grammy, two BRIT Awards and a Glastonbury headline slot to boot. Playing TGE in 2008 and 2009 consecutively, the indie-folk troubadours enchanted their audience, who proved their dedication through the raucous sing along that ensued, despite the fact that they were then yet to release an album. The band's soaring melodies have enraptured hearts worldwide, with "Babel' going to number 1 in both the UK and US, becoming the fastest selling album in the UK. Earlier this summer, the band was awarded the prestigious Ivor Novello award for International Achievement, who knows what else they can achieve?

The xx (UK)
thexx
Played @ Hectors House/Ocean Rooms
The xx are masters of atmospheric indie. Following their sensationally dreamy TGE performances, their debut album "XX" came second in the NME's album of the year chart and was named the best of 2009 by The Guardian. The melancholy yet ethereal record went on to win the 2010 Mercury Prize, against stiff competition from fellow Great Escape alumni, Foals, Laura Marling and Wild Beasts. Nominated for three BRIT Awards in 2011, the London trio only built on their success with the release of "Coexist" in 2012, with their Bestival set pulling the largest ever crowd at the festival. The band is currently in the process of making their third album, recording in Texas and Iceland during the past year.

Other stand out artists to have played TGE 2008 include Bombay Bicycle Club, Bon Iver, Friendly Fires, Glasvegas, Gotye, Mystery Jets, Noah and The Whale, Santogold, Slow Club, The Futureheads, The Go Team, The Hold Steady, The Subways, These New Puritans and Wiley

Here is our playlist featuring a few stand out artists from TGE 2008
