The Sónar 2015 line-up includes several musicians, producers and collaborative projects that are at the forefront of today's most risk taking and audacious experimental electronica.
Editions Mego, a landmark label
An important trendsetter in this field is Austrian label Editions Mego, whose showcase will celebrate the labels' 20th anniversary with performances by six artists who represent their current output: KTL, the cult project uniting Sunn O))) Stephen O'Malley with label boss Peter Rehberg, also known by his alter ego, Pita; LCC, from Asturias, whose immense "d/evolution" was one of 2014's most outstanding albums; respected British noise pioneer Russell Hasswell, currently enjoying a period of great inspiration and frenzied activity; the very promising Klara Lewis, daughter of Wire's Graham Lewis and author ofthe dazzling debut "Ett"; Italian duo Voices From The Lake, who just released their first album on the label, "Live at MAXXI", a new twist on their hypnotic ambient atmospheres; and EVOL, the renowned hardcore-rave de-constructing duo formed by Roc Jiménez de Cisnerosand Stephen Sharp.
Sonic experimenters transcending genres
Any discussion about experimentation and sound art would be incomplete without Mika Vainio. Founder of Pan Sonic and a musician with an exemplary career, Vaino touches down at Sónarwith his new "soon to be released" album, as well as the extraordinary compositions from his previous "Konstellatio" album, released under his Ø moniker. A mandatory mention also goes to Nazoranai, the experimental super group formed by Japanese avant-garde musician Keiji Haino, Australian guitarist Oren Ambarchi and, again, Stephen O'Malley, who will perform one of their uncompromising live shows on the Red Bull Music Academy's SonarDôme stage.
Other key names in cutting edge techno and electronica who draw inspiration from breaking new musical boundaries are: Lee Gamble, who has superbly revamped the golden era of jungle and rave music and will present his new visual show created with English artist Dave Gaskarth; Vessel, one of today's most intense artists, and a fixture on the Tri Angle label; Powell, head honcho of the fantastic Diagonal Recordings who recently released an EP on XL Recordings The Bug, the main project from the continually challenging Kevin Martin, who will perform tracks from his excellent "Angels & Devils" album live on stage; The Italian Lorenzo Senni, eminent hardcore and trance deconstructivist, who has released two well recieved albums on Editions Mego and Boomkat; ArnauSala, who works regularly on Vatican Shadow's Hospital Productions will return to Sónar with his Exotèric Continent project; and finally the surprisingly and quite unknown Noir Noir, who mixes industrial sounds, repetitive electronica, psychedelic and black metal in his studio in on the Catalan coast.
