Sónar 2014 expands its collaboration with three of the most important cultural centres and institutions in Montjuïc, the location of Sónar by Day headquarters: Mies van der Rohe Pavillion, CaixaForum and the Mercat de les Flors, which for a few days will transform into three extra Sónar venues.

The Dutch artist and sound researcher Edwin van der Heide presents Spectral Diffractions at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, a collaborative project between Sónar+D, the Mies van der Rohe foundation and Universitat Pompeu Fabra's Music Technology Group curated by Lluis Nacenta. It is a sound installation consisting of 40 speakers located in the roof of the pavilion that will send frequencies taken from different voices: each of these individual frequencies can not be identified as human, but the sensation changes when they overlap and play in harmony, as the visitor moves through the space. According to van der Heide, "Spectral Diffractions" is a proposal for autonomous overtone control and attempts to reverse this hierarchy between the perception of sound and overtones.

CaixaForum presents two important activities within Sónar+D. The first being A l'Escolta (Listening), a series of lectures (curated by Arnau Horta), whose goal is to discuss questions raised by what is usually referred to as "sound art". The Barcelona meeting will unite several international experts from the sound and listening arts, including Seth Kim-Cohen, Salomé Voegelin, Carme Pardo, Marta García Quiñones, José Manuel Costa and Edwin Van der Heide. Additionally, CaixaForum will welcome to its lobby Last Days. Rèquiem per les Glòries by Edu Comelles as part of the "A l' Escolta" program. The installation will incorporate a multitude of sounds recorded by the artist during the days prior to the demolition of Barcelona's ring road located at Plaça de les Glòries.

Sónar and Mercat de les Flors collaborate for the first time with their presentation of the show The Inquisitive Middle, a contemporary dance piece created by stage director, performer and catalan choreographer Sònia Gómez, with British dancer Lucy Suggate, set to the music of "The Inheritors", the latest album by James Holden. The British producer will perform live with both artists, on what will be the first interaction between them.
