SonarCinema is now a section within the Sónar+D line-up, featuring the screening of 13 films and audiovisual works, including pieces about the South African scene (directed by Spoek Mathambo), the label Stones Throw, the Low End Theory nights in Los Angeles, a year on tour with Buraka Som Sistema, the New York and Tokyo scenes (produced by Resident Advisor) and the film celebrating Red Bull Music Academy's 15 years of history.

Several of the films will be presented by their authors and central figures live, and there will be a screening of the work of the production company CANADA, discussed by themselves.

Check SonarCinema line-up and schedules here.

Scenes

SonarCinema is screening several films about the creativity and music that defines the world's leading scenes and cities: "Future Sound Of Mzansi", co-directed by Spoek Mathambo (who is featured in the Sónar musical line-up) is a portrait of the fascinating and vibrant electronic landscape of today's South Africa; "Looking For The Perfect Beat" and "Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton" respectively focus on two of the most important collectives in Los Angeles: the Low End Theory nights-with The Gaslamp Killer and Flying Lotus among others- and the one based around the Stones Throw label, founded by the great Peanut Butter Wolf; "Elektro Moskva" is an essay that reconstructs the history of electronica in the Soviet era; while two of the chapters that will be screened as part of the Real Scenes series produced by Resident Advisoralso talk about two very specific places: "Real Scenes: New York" and "Real Scenes: Tokyo".

Creators

SonarCinema presents "Off The Beaten Track", which documents a year in the life of the portuguese band Buraka Som Sistema, who will be performing at Sónar by Day: travels, shows, rehearsals, photo shoots and free time between one activity and another. Two unclassifiable films will also be screened: "A Spell To Ward Off The Darkness",a captivating film that brings together paganism, music, the wild side of nature and alternative lifestyles on the journey of an individual in search of himself; and "Optical Sound", an experimental short film assembled from the offcuts and fragments of celluloid usually unnoticed to the viewer's retina.

Processes

Several of the films presented at SonarCinema this year focus on the creative process, both in technology and in composition and sound production. This is the case of "Europe in 8 Bits", about recycling old consoles and computers to use them as new instruments for musical creation; and "What difference does it make?", a film celebrating the 15-year history of the Red Bull Music Academy, which examines the mystery of creation in interviews with several of the artists who attended the RBMA in New York (including Brian Eno, Lee Perry, Giorgio Moroder, Erykah Badu and Nile Rodgers). In a similar vein, "Beatz" looks at European electronica over the last three years with the dj and producer (and now also filmmaker) Eduardo de la Calle. Process and technology are also the subjects -considered in great depth-of "I Dream of Wires", a documentary about the obsession of some of today's prestigious producers (Carl Craig, James Holden, Chris Carter, Legowelt) with modular synthesizers.

Presentations

Several of the films in the SonarCinema line-up programming will be presented by their creators and central figures: Spoek Mathambo will be introducing "Future Sound Of Mzansi"; the members Buraka Som Sistema will do the honours for "Off The Beaten Track"; Eduardo de la Calle will be participating in a talk prior to the screening of "Beatz" with one of its central figures, Swiss producer Luciano; and Javier Polo (director) and Lina Badenes (producer) will be talking about their film, "Europe in 8 Bits".

SonarCinema also includes the presentation of the work by CANADA, an audiovisual production company and filmmaking collective based in Barcelona of considerable international renown, creators of pieces for bands and artists like Phoenix, Two Door Cinema Club, Justice, El Guincho and Scissor Sisters, among many others. They will be talking about their process of internationalization, partnerships, history and future projects, and will be showing a selection of their major works.
