Germany's Alva Noto and Japan's Ryoji Ikeda, two of the most interesting sonic adventurers of our time, present Cyclo. The collaboration started 10 years ago and takes shape with the release of their work and the presentation of a striking show conceived around the idea of visualising sound. This very special show at SonarClub on Friday 17th June, just before the concert by The Human League, completes the Sonar 2011 line-up and is another outstanding project in terms of its highly experimental nature.

The next day, Saturday 18th, on the same stage and at practically the same time (this time preceding the live show by Underworld), the festival presents the show by Chris Cunningham, probably the most influential music video producer over the last 15 years, a highly talented artist and a daring experimentalist, who comes to Sonar with a new visual show highlighting his work as a sonic artist.

Other highlights in this experimental bloc take place during Sonar by Day. Among them are the show by the Sewing Machine Orchestra of Canada's Martin Messier, where the name of the project speaks for itself: it is an orchestra consisting of old sewing machines controlled and processed by the Canadian artist, who was at Sónar last year with La Chambre des Machines. The German pianist Volker Bertleman, better known as Hauschka, returns to the spirit of John Cage with his carefully constructed pianos and a musical approach that includes electronic drums and basses. Another artist who enjoys processing various voices and instruments is David Moss, the leader of the German project Denseland, in which the music flows between the acoustic, the abstract and pure improvisation. And to complete the trio of German aces, we must mention The Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble, who are coming to Sónar accompanied by an instrumental group to delight those attending the festival with their 100% organic techno.

Also at Sónar by Day, on the SonarComplex stage, the festival presents two acts from Japan whose experimental facet is essential to their approach: Open Reel Ensemble, a group of 5 musicians whose main instrument is old rolls of magnetic tape; and Daito Manabe (who is also present in OFFFMàtica, the exhibition area of Sónar 2011) with an unprecedented show in which music and body language go hand in hand, and musical composition dictates the artist's facial los movements by means of electric impulses.

Finally, there are two events ar the festival which will take place outside the normal Sónar framework. First, the series of works entitled "Sonorous aviaries: music and mirds" which is presented in Cosmocaixa, with pieces by Jan Jelinek, BJ Nilsen, Carl Michael Von Hausswolff, Francisco López and Sawako, as well as a collective installation by ALKU (the duo consisting of Roc Jiménez de Cisneros and Anna Ramos) featuring works by several authors. And secondly, the concert rounding off Sónar 2011 this year, at the Grec-Sónar Night on Sunday 19th June in Barcelona's Teatre Grec, featuring Ryuichi Sakamoto and once again, Alva Noto.
