Sonar presents around 40 Spanish acts covering a broad musical spectrum, ranging from the experimental electronica of Downliners Sekt, Xesús Valle and the Barcelona Laptop Orchestra, to the new forms vergining on pop of Edredón and Shelby Grey, taking in the danceable freshness of djs like El Timbe, Chelis and Judah, among many others.

Astrud (who will be performing with the Col·lectiu Brossa) is the most high-profile name on a list in which many of the artists are reproducing their projects live for the first time, or whose styles are in the early stages of development.

The festival presents two showcases by two of Spain's most interesting labels today. First, Catalonia's Disboot, the representatives of the new trends in fractured electronica verging on bass music, will be presenting two projects: Downliners Sekt (a duo with a high international profile) and C156 (a quartet of talented young producers). They are accompanied by the Madrid-based collective Natura Sonoris, with a style based on dark sonic landscape and emphatic depth, which in some cases is closer to forceful gothic electronica (as in the case of Sistema) and in others is similar to a melodic and danceable techno (as with Henry Saiz, the man in charge of the label).

Several of the Spanish artists at Sonar 2011 use the multiple facets of pop in their approaches to music. Edredón's style is based on Krautrock and German-influenced melodic electronica; Facto y Los Amigos del Norte use a light and naturalist hip-hop with catchy melodies; Beat'A'Boom produce songs that drink deep from funk, jazz and hip-hop with beatboxing as their central theme; the Barcelona-based Chilean DJ Raff produces highly precise beats and grooves bordering on the otherwordly side of funk; Carlos Jean has always had one eye on commercial pop, while for Shelby Grey, melodies are essential in a style in which disco music, 80s rock and electro sit side by side. And of course we must not forget Astrud, one of the most widely admired groups on the Spanish pop scene, who have reinvented their repertoire with the marimbas, violins and accordion of the Col·lectiu Brossa.

Risk and experimentation in the various dialects of electronic language are at the heart of several of the Spanish offerings at Sonar 2011. Galicia's Xesús Valle records all types of field sounds and then manipulates and constructs delicately crafted pieces with them; EVOL offer us an algorithmic approach to composition which is part research, part having fun; L'Eix blend acoustic and digital sounds in a style in which silence also plays a key role; the 12 members of the Barcelona Laptop Orchestra (whose name explains the project perfectly) will be divided up for their show at Sónar: six members will be in SonarComplex and the other six will be connected for a "network music" workshop that will be taking place in the Gran Teatre del Liceu at the same time; Ragul, Neuron and Stendhal Syndrome are three of the most interesting emerging talents today, working in the territories of domestic electronica, minimalist drones and darkwave, respectively; and Noaipre continues to dig deep and play around with the many genres that have emerged as a result of dubstep.

Obviously, dancing is an essential part of the festival, and many of the Spanish artists at Sonar 2011 are djs working in various areas and styles: house and disco (Aster, Nacho Marco, Radiocontrol, Pablo Sánchez, Nacho Bay), techno (MouseUp, Angel Molina), bass music (Chelis, DJ Sith & David M), funk and hip hop (Judah) electronica and pop (Pffff, Half Nelson & Vidal Romero, Joan S. Luna) and even moombathon and Latin breaks (El Timbe).
