The Evolution Of British Urban Rhythms

Sonar has been keeping a very close eye on developments on the British urban rhythms scene for several years, from the development of jungle, 2 step and UK garage towards dubstep, and from there to the wonky sound, UK funky and the new dimensions created between bass music and techno.

This year is especially important because of the quantum leap by the scene towards a mass audience, with the success of the Magnetic Man project, the first to take dubstep to the charts and a mainstream audience; and also because of Katy B, a collaborator with the trio and the new star on the British scene after the stunning success of a her first hit single, "Katy On A Mission," and who is about to release her eagerly awaited debut album.

But 2011 is also important because of the growth of labels, groups and producers opening up new paths based around dubstep: among them are the Numbers and Night Slugs hallmarks, two of today's most important and acclaimed labels, who are visiting Sónar with two showcases presenting the best of each of their catalogues; from Numbers, Jackmaster, Redinho, Spencer, Deadboy, Italy's Lory D and Jessie Ware (a gala team); and from Night Slugs, Egyptrixx (Canadian but with a very British sound) and the face-off between two of the label's leading lights, L-Vis 1990 and Bok Bok.

The British dream team is rounded off by the projects Africa Hitech (formed by Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek, two veterans adding glimmers of soul, dancehall and African tradition to the fat beats + broken rhythms binomial), Illum Sphere (a versatile creator of new forms for the genre based in his home town of Manchester) and the hyperactive Floating Points (a lover of boogie, house and more abstract beats).

A key role in all this evolution and explosion in the United Kingdom is being played by illustrious names like  Mary Anne Hobbs -who is this year playing a special solo set in her fifth consecutive appearance at Sonar- and the veteran Zinc, a cornerstone of the nineties jungle scene and more recently, the man behind several bass house hits with his new Bingo Beats label.
