Each year Pukkelpop endeavours to organize a sustainable festival. Electricity, water, transport, waste, food and drink … The impact of such a huge event on the environment must not be underestimated. That is the reason why we do our utmost to make Pukkelpop an environment-friendly festival and reduce its ecological footprint to a minimum. Pukkelpop plays it green! In the past years our constant efforts gained international recognition when we received Yourope’s Green’n’Clean award for environment-friendly festivals. This year we are continuing along the same green path by trying to constantly improve our Eco Line-Up. Energy consumption will be reduced as much as possible and the use of environment-friendly and recyclable products will be encouraged. Waste will be sorted and recycled. In cooperation with the City of Hasselt Pukkelpop has drawn up an integral environment plan, which is assessed and ameliorated on an annual basis. On top of the existing measures in the field of garbage, noise, energy and mobility, all our commercial partners, all festivalgoers, artists, collaborators, emergency services, city services and stallholders will be involved in our ‘green adventure’. A few new initiatives we want to put in the spotlight this year: ECO-UNITS This year Pukkelpop rents a number of new units from Group Machiels. Not only do they look great, they are ecological as well. They will be used as the Pukkelpop collaborators' offices. During the design as well as the production phase, Machiels Building Solutions constantly measures the ecological impact of its products down to the smallest detail. This way the ecological footprint of these units is limited. ECO-SURVEYS This year two Coca-Cola hostesses will conduct a survey on recycling. If you agree to answer their questions, you will be rewarded with a drink ticket. The information will be used to examine in what ways young people can be stimulated to recycle even more than they already do. BUTT BINS To prevent pollution of the festival site Pukkelpop will install ‘butt bins’, where smokers can leave their cigarette butts. Few people seem to realize that cigarette butts are small chemical waste and are very harmful for the environment. On top of these new initiatives, there are still the same success formulas: BIO-PLANET Detergent, shower gel, shampoo … Pukkelpop scubs and washes the eco way. Pukkelpop is again joining forces with Sol Cleaning & Care and Bio-Planet to keep things clean. Bio-Planet is a unique bio-supermarket that sells more than 7,000 biological food and ecological non-food products. As a result we will have freshly showered artists, loads of clean cutlery and crockery and thousands of litres of ecologically sound wastewater. And if the crew’s and artists’ stomachs start to rumble, a nice biological biscuit or juice will satisfy them. IZEN Thanks to the IZEN sun boilers, artists and crew will be able to take nicely hot showers. Sun boilers are the most efficient form of renewable energy at a very accessible price. The Flemish government is also promoting this system and intends to make it available to everybody in the next few years. CAMPING Pukkelpop also wants to stimulate garbage sorting and recycling at the campsite. In each zone there will be a recycling point where campers can get garbage bags and dispose of their sorted garbage. Eco-teams will regularly collect garbage in each zone. Camp, recycle and win the exclusive Pukkelpop TOTE BAG! This action is also supported by our partner Hasselt University. You can find the complete list of environmental initiatives here.
