The Kosmos crew is made up of people who share a passion for creating something truly special. The festival wouldn't be possible without its volunteers - and it's thanks to Sofia, our volunteer coordinator, that they come together for the festival. Let's take a moment to get to know her and the amazing work she does!
Can you introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about your role at Kosmos?
- My name is Sofia, but most people know me as Soppa. Kosmos has been a highlight of my summers since the very beginning of its existence. Back then, my friend and one of the main organizers, Arina, invited me to be an eco-team volunteer. So, for the first few years, I was cleaning. I was then asked to be the eco-team leader and, in that way, became part of the Kosmos crew.
- As the festival was growing and evolving, Arina wanted to share some of her workload, and I was honored to be trusted as the new volunteer coordinator in 2020. Then Covid happened, but since 2022, I've actually gotten to do it! I'm the person who receives and goes through all volunteer applications, assembles teams and manages the volunteer email and communication with volunteer applicants and team leaders. Teams such as building, cleaning, drivers, parking and first aid are mostly my responsibility to put together.
Is there something specific about the 10th anniversary that you're particularly excited about?
- I think the 10th anniversary will be quite emotional for me, as for many people - crew and visitors alike. The way Kosmos has grown and become more respected through the years is the result of countless hours of great dedication by so many people who live and breathe this culture. To be able to witness this milestone with them is wonderful.
- Kosmos is like an alternative little universe in which we create a space where we can truly be our truest selves: kind, open, loving and understanding. Free from the weight that the modern world puts on us. Especially in these turbulent global times, we need sanctuaries like Kosmos to remind ourselves who we truly are as humans.
What tips would you give to someone who is considering volunteering at Kosmos for the first time?
- In my opinion, even though Kosmos has grown and become more organized, we need to keep in mind that, ultimately, we're all still just people who want to make something magical happen together and give back. So don't apply if you just want a free ticket. Only apply if you truly enjoy acts of service to your community. If you get selected, work with a humble mindset, be open and creative and don't be afraid to ask questions. I hope you make lots of new friends and enjoy being a part of it all!
