Seit 2016 verbreiten Los Apartamentos jamaikanische Mento Folklore Sounds - von privaten Pool-Parties zu internationalen Festivals. Jetzt wird es Zeit für die nächste Phase, mit dem Release des Albums "Water Di Garden." 

Aber wie kommt es, dass sich sechs Gentlemen aus Deutschland für den fast vergessenen, ersten originalen Sound der karibischen Insel erwärmen? Die Antwort ist: Die Musiker haben eine Vergangenheit im Ska, Reggaes Vorgänger und Mentos Nachfolger auf Jamaika. Sie haben Alben aufgenommen in Bands wie The Braces, Monkey Shop oder Kapelle #3. Und anscheinend hatten sie das Gefühl, dass sie neue Eindrücke brauchten, und so wurde tiefer und tiefer in den musikalischen Archiven der Insel geforscht. Ein neuer Ansatz wurde gesucht und gefunden.

Es begann damit, dass Winston, der eigentlich Kontra-Bassist ist, in seinem Hinterhof über Monate an einer Rumba Box baute. Dieses Instrument bildet das Rückgrat einer jeden Mento-Band. Zur gleichen Zeit tauschte Ali seine E-Gitarre gegen ein Banjo ein. Und Woche für Woche kamen weitere Musikerfreunde zu den akustischen Treffen. Die meisten von ihnen versuchten sich an Instrumenten, die neu für sie waren. Es war befreiend, neu anzufangen, sich auszuprobieren und dabei auf Mikrofone und Verstärker zu verzichten. 

Das Repertoire ergab sich nach dem Durchforsten der alten 1-Mikrofon-Aufnahmen aus den 1950ern, die oft nur auf raren Compilations oder Youtube verfügbar sind. Namen wie The Ticklers, Lord Fly, Count Lasher und Lord Flea wurden hoch gehandelt und ihre Stile absorbiert.

The Stadt Köln bot den perfekten Nährboden für Los Apartamentos. Es gibt jede Menge Kneipen, in den Live-Musik geschätzt wird, und das nicht nur während des weltberühmten Karnevals. Zu jeder Jahreszeit wird gerne lauthals mitgesungen, vorausgesetzt, es handelt sich um Refrains, die so ansteckend sind wie "Lawd what a night, not a bite, What a Saturday night." ("Linstead Market").

Es gab keinen Gedanken an die Veröffentlichung von Tonträgern, bis sich wie aus dem Nichts Chuck Wren vom Chicagoer Label Jump Up Records meldete. Chuck, der sein Label bereits seit 1993 betreibt, hatte auf der Suche nach neuen Bands für seine Calypso-Reihe ein Live-Video von Los Apartamentos im Internet gefunden.

Der niederländische Musiker und Produzent Boss Van Trigt (Boss Capone, The Upsessions) konnte dazu gewonnen werden, das Album zu produzieren. Er sorgte dafür, dass der Old School-Vibe nicht von moderner Studio-Technik oder Perfektionismus gestört wird. Die Aufnahmen wurden an zwei Wochenenden abgeschlossen, im Kölner Masons Arms Studio, mit Hanno Schattow als Gastgeber und Ton-Ingenieur. Es war wie in den alten Tagen: Alle spielen auf einmal in ein Mikrophon, das mitten im Raum stand. Das Ergebnis: 13 Mento-Klassiker, neu interpretiert von Los Apartamentos. Mit viel Freude und großem Respekt vor den Originalen gespielt. Das Album in exklusiver Premiere beim Freedom Sounds Festival.

But how do six gentlemen from Germany warm to the nearly forgotten first original sound of the Caribbean island? The answer is: The musicians all have a past in ska music, reggae's forerunner, and mento's predecessor in Jamaica. They have been recording artists in various groups like The Braces, Monkey Shop, or Kapelle 3. And there must have been a general feeling of being stuck that caused them to dig deeper and deeper in the island's musical traditions. A new angle would just be cool.

It started with Winston who is a double bass player building a rumba box from scratch in his backyard. This instrument builds the backbone of any mento band. At the same time, Ali traded his guitar for a banjo. And every other week more musical friends joined this purely acoustic venture, most of them on instruments they hadn't played before. It felt liberating not to use microphones in rehearsals.

A setlist was compiled by listening to those old one-microphone recordings from the 1950s in Jamaica, often only accessible via youtube or on rare compilations. Names like The Ticklers, Lord Fly, Count Lasher, and Lord Flea were praised, and their styles absorbed. 

The city of Cologne offered the perfect hotbed for this band. Pubs are all around, acoustic live music is cherished not only during the world-famous Carnival season. At every time of the year audiences love to sing along if a chorus is as infectious as "Lawd what a night, not a bite, What a Saturday night." ("Linstead Market")

Then, out of the blue came an offer from Chuck Wren of Jump Up Records in Chicago to record an album. Chuck, whose label has been running since 1993, was on the lookout for new bands to continue his Calypso series, and found a live video by Los Apartamentos on the Internet. 

Dutch musician and producer Boss Van Trigt (Boss Capone, The Upsessions) agreed to produce the album and made sure that the original vibe was not disturbed by modern studio equipment or perfectionism. The whole was finished at Masons Arms Studio with the help of Hanno Schattow in just two weekends. The recordings were done like in the old days: One microphone, and (nearly) no overdubs. It's all about the fun. The album will premiere at Freedom Sounds Festival 2019!
